The previous year, she'd had a shaky start to her career and had, as a result, been pulled off of the track for a number of months for further training. When she had returned, she had been much stronger and had started to build up her record. She had ended her season with a third in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and then returned to the track in the Mermaid Cup with a second. Now, though, she needed to continue to build on that record and so she had been entered in another race, this time the Princess Cup which ran for fillies and mares of Grade Four and Five over eight furlongs on the turf.
So far, the race consisted of only two horses. Mia herself was the older and more experienced of them, but her competition had consistency on their side. There was definitely a chance that the two year old, Innocent Passion of Stride Of Perfection Stables, would come out on top and become the first of the juveniles to rise to Grade Four. It was early in the season for it, but the filly had shown herself to have some true potential and would definitely be a true force for the world to deal with as she grew into a fine sprinting mare.
Mia would be giving it her all though, and Jacob intended to have her ready for the race. It was her first workout this year, her first race having been a last minute entry that they had been unprepared for. But this was different, this time they had known in advance and planned the workout into the usually busy schedule. The jockey had spoken with Matthias, and had gone off to get ready while he handlers took the filly down to the track. By the time he arrived at the track himself, Lucas was already waiting with his small, bay mount.
Away from other equines, the filly was gentle. Jacob walked over to be greeted warmly by her and ran his hand across her nose. It was nice to see her happy and healthy, and he was planning to make sure she remained in top shape for a while yet. He mounted the filly quietly, and watched as the handler walked away. The workout today would not involve gating, and so he was no longer needed until the end of the workout.
They were set to run a short, three furlong stretch up the turf to stretch the filly's legs, and Jacob was looking forward to the ride. He pushed her forwards, and she moved eagerly into gallop, her stride long and elegant as she moved up the track. Her pace was increasing as they moved up the first furlong, and she was accelerating well. Her eyes glinted brightly, her audits pressed forwards as they moved up the turf. Jacob relaxed as he fell into time with her rhythm, and he crouched low over the filly's neck.
The workout was quick, and she drove the filly onwards as they continued with their increasing pace. Soon, they were at the point were only one furlong remained and Jacob drove the filly, hard, toward the post. The whip cracked and he fought, the filly trying hard beneath him as they continued their battle. They pulled into the final half furlong, only strides from the post and the filly seemed to find some last ounce of speed. Mia had never ran so fast as at that moment, and Jacob grinned. She wasn't only doing well, she was getting even better!
