March Week Four
As many of you have probably noticed, Witch Creek's stable has pretty much doubled in recent weeks. Births have occurred, most recently a Crooked Fire and Royal Assault filly to be named Call Me Crooked, and sales, private and public have also occurred, most notably Dreamvalley Stables and The Wire Annual Origin Sale.
We are truly excited to have a string that will be able to challenge the top barns of The Wire and Green Horse Fields' racing circuits. Horses added to our racing string include: Cold Mountain (formally Dreamvalley Stable owned), Midnight Thriller (on lease from Akita Rose Stables, Popcorn Blitz (on lease from Akita Rose Stables), and Ashes to Ashes (on lease from Akita Rose Stables).
Midnight Thriller will be pointed towards the Triple Tiara as she was before and will face our Fiery Touch. Fiery Touch may appear once or twice in a prep for the Kentucky Derby so as to avoid her grade five stable mate and Paradise Island. Frozen Motion will be focused on the Turf Triple Crown in coming weeks.
We added another prospect to our ranks in the form of Limited Edition who was purchased from the Dreamvalley Sale. Limited Edition is by Gold Edition and out of Trust Limits.
Most of the horses we bought in the Dreamvalley Sale were purchased for broodmare/stud purposes. Brave Angel and Candid Silver were both retired though they will not be bred in Year Twelve. Earlier this week it was decided that Imitation Black and Enchantress would be retired as well. Imitation Black was pulled up in a routine gallop with some heat later found in his hind leg. He was forced into retirement due to a tear of the tendon. Enchantress and Sweeto Cheeto were also x-rayed at this time. Enchantress had some wear and tear in her muscles and tendons and was retired as well. Sweeto Cheeto was cleared to race for a few more years yet.
Witch Creek also bought into an unproven stallion from Stride of Perfection Stables. Positively Precious, who has been retired for quite some time and who has not been bred yet, was brought to Witch Creek and will stand alongside DW Flamekissed and Imitation Black. The chestnut stud has plans to be bred in Year Thirteen to Enchantress, Candid Silver and Finale Slew, dam of Jazzman and Cresential.
Red Herring, a colt bought from the Wire Annual Origin Sale, broke his maiden first time out against other experienced maidens over at The Wire. He won by four lengths without even being asked and is highly touted among our two year olds. We believe he is second only behind Mastermind. The colts will not face one another this year. However, who knows what could happen next year.
We have one more maiden at Witch Creek by the name of Cross My Heart. She is a black filly who was purchased at a kill auction by myself. She was an abuse case and particularly dislikes men. She is entered in the Kraken Maiden and has been training lights out over Witch Creek's turf track.
If you see a familiar bay mare with tough muscles escorting any of the Witch Creek racing string about, it may just be The Devil's Touch. The Devil is not a very good mama and has re-entered training to be on the track while El Sol del Mar takes care of two year twelve foals. She will be the parade pony, though don't tell The Devil that. The Touch Up mare has given birth so far to a Y11 filly out of Akita Rose Stable's Sand Storm and a Y12 Night Stalker colt. Current plans call for Stride of Perfection stables to breed this dramatic gal to True Enough in Year Thirteen after which The Devil will retire from her broodmare position.
Happy racing,
Ripley Marsh
