Amber Black recently commented that her year twelve weanlings are some of the best that she's ever bred. Let's take a look into just what calibre of horse from SOPS is making Amber say something seemingly impossible.
First up in the crop is Impressionable. Empress has a full sister, Meritorious, owned by Intrepid Racing. She is by Bank On Greatness and out of Admirable. This makes her the granddaughter of such horses as Merry Bay King, Bank On Silver, War Admiral and Rosalind. If that wasn't impressive enough, let's consider her parents themselves. Greatness is the full brother to GHF Triple Crown winner Impressario. Admirable is the full sister of MHS Triple Crown winner Admiral's Revenge. So what you're looking at here is a daughter of two full siblings to Triple Crown winners. How did this come about? Well apparently, SOPS volunteered to use a reserve they had to Greatness in exchange for a foal out of Admirable. When twins were confirmed to be on the way Intrepid got one of the two. Thus, we've got two fillies brimming with Triple Crown talent here.
Athena's Desires is the next horse we'll be taking a look at here. She's by Hall Of Fame inductee Pegasus Wings and out of Hall Of Fame inductee Deadly Desires. She's got roots in Royal Red Richard, Forbidden Wings, Dancing In The Moonlight and Requiem. Thus, Athena's got prolific breeding talent in her grandparents and racing talent from her actual parents. She will absolutely be in the turf sprints and she's already shown some wind in her hooves. She's also got a twin, Winged Pegasus owned by Triple Krown Racing. Talk about a fertile year, two healthy sets of twins! Athena is set to be the next champion turf sprinter.
Next up is Palisades Pirate, a colt by the second horse Amber ever owned, Shiver Me Timbers, and out of Star Thoroughbreds' Palisades Silver. No huge names jump out here, but man does Pirate have some interesting names to live up to. His sire has fatheres such horses as grade two turf sprinter Buccaneer and the upcoming successful Prideful Limits and Aquatic Addiction. Palisades Silver is best known for being the dam of grade one Silver Stalker. It was this feat that first caught Amber's eye. He will be racing around a mile on the dirt tracks.
Silent Snap is our next contestant. This chestnut colt is by With A Snap and out of Silent Wings. He was originally in the foal crop sale this year, but was reclaimed after the Kacey Hill incident. Snap's sire won the Breeders Cup Sprint in his time. So far his only foal of racing age is grade two Lynara's Kingdom, who started off the season defeating Sunset Crusade and has only won since then. She's won six times so far and only lost once to new rival Seraphim. Snap's dam Silent Wings was the grade one mare with attitude. She was the first to establish the Forbidden Wings family legacy of reaching grade one and won over twenty races in her lifetime. This will be her first foal. Her dam Forbidden Wings requires no introduction, while Stormin Passion is a stallion owned by foreign stable Southern Acres Inc.
Pandora is the last filly SOPS personally bred this year and the one Amber appears to be most excited about. By Hall Of Fame legend Impressario and out of equally legendary Hall Of Fame inductee Wildly Natural, it is clear already that this filly is bred to be classy. But then you look back, and you realize this filly's got a solid pedigree of Hall Of Fame talent, with Merry Bay King, Bank On Silver, The Natural and Wild Flower all playing their cards. Pan is expected to run on the turf over the classic distances. She is Amber's newest hope for the Turf Triple Crown already at such a young age. With a pedigree of such solid class, Pan could be named a champion on blood alone, but we know it's not only blood that determines champions.
Last but not least is Amber's new purchase, Devil's Flair. This chestnut stallion has bloodlines firmly routed over foreign circuits. By Augusto, the legendary hot blooded foreign stallion who sired blue hen mare Requiem, and out of Flight Of Fancy, we've got an interesting colt here. Not much is known on this circuit of Augusto, but Amber has been gunning to get a direct foal of his for a long time. Now that she has, she's thrilled to work with this influential foundation bloodline. Flight Of Fancy is the dam of grade one Comeuppance. So already, we've got a pedigree of class here, class and hot blood. Devil is expected to gun for distances over nine to twelve furlongs on the turf. This brings him into contention with Pan and Empress. Time will tell what will happen with these three.
