In the last two seasons, Paradise Island had mainly proven herself on the dirt. She was well known for her talents on the surface, and having won the triple tiara there was no doubting that she could go to great lengths. But Sonja was not a one-surface girl, despite what might have been seen in the past. This year, the team were focussing on racing her on the turf, to prove that she had what it took to master not one but two surfaces. It was proving challenging, but Sonja seemed to be adapting well to working on turf and they still ran her over dirt in training to ensure she did not lose her edge. Her next race was set to be the Deadly Desires Memorial Stakes, an eight furlong race across the turf. It was a major race, against some stiff competition, but it was hoped that she would now be able to start showing her true talents once more.
If there was one person who truly believed that Sonja could pull it off, it was Tanya. The jockey knew what the filly was made of, saw the fire in the bay's eyes and knew the passion in her heart. She had rode Sonja from day one, had rose to victory with her and was only well known on the track because of her efforts with the horse. It was her that had originally pushed to race her on the turf and now she was getting her way she was not going to allow herself to fail. They'd raced the turf several times now, and Tanya was sure that victory could not elude them forever.
Her competition came in the form of two Star Thoroughbreds' racers - Streaks Of Passion and Passionate Flyer - both horses with experience on the turf. But that would not stop Tanya an Sonja giving their best. In fact, there was a chance that Sonja could beat them and prove herself to be something greater than anyone had believed. No, it was not the biggest turf race around but it was a start. The bay looked good as she was led onto the track, focussed and ready to run and Tanya was glad to be in the familiar saddle one more. "Here goes, baby."
Urging the horse forwards, Tanya couldn't help smiling as Sonja broke quickly from where she stood with confidence and started to move nicely up the turf. Due to the practice over the last few months she was no longer awkward on the surface and seemed comfortable as they pressed forwards. There was no rush, and Tanya once they were moving Tanya no longer pushed the filly to go faster. After all, speed was for the race - today was just about ensuring that she was ready for that run.
