Lily bit her lip lightly, eyebrows furrowed slightly as she led Optimus away from the barn. She was feeling a little agitated today and she knew that she couldn't mount Optimus and expect him to behave worth a lick if she let him read her like that. The blonde jockey quickly shook her shoulders and halted Optimus, quickly climbing up the colt like a jungle gym. The benefits of being short! Optimus even seemed a little surprised because he pinned his ears and took a couple of steps sidebackwards... Yes, simultaneously sideways and backwards. Lily shook her head lightly at the colt's antics and clucked him forward.
The track was quiet this morning and Lily was thankful for that. Less of a chance of an issue... She patted the colt as he jigged sideways on the track. If only Optimus would go FORWARD! Lily couldn't help but smile now. Other jockeys at CCI and elsewhere might get frustrated with his inability to stand still but not Lily. She found it funny.
Alright, bud... You want to go forward so badly, let's go!
No sooner had the words left her lips then Optimus jumped forward. Lily's blonde wisps that didn't fit into her helmet blew back in the sudden onset of wind and she grinned. The colt was blazing already and she eased him back to a breeze. He was a powerhouse for sure but she didn't want to waste it. It would be a travesty if the two year old lost steam and couldn't have another season. She was so thrilled to have him, she was not going to waste anything.
The colt was moving along at a good click on his "breeze" and Lily eased up on the reins a little, allowing him a little more speed around the first turn. Optimus didn't need any urging at any point, particularly when there were other horses on the track to get away from. He didn't care about competing really, he just wanted those other horses away from him! All Lily had to do was ease up on the reins slightly and the colt would move off. His auds flicked to the side, Optimus almost looked bored but Lily knew better. He loved what he did. And thank god for that because he was good at it too.
Lily and Optimus breezed down the backstretch without a problem and carefully made their way around the turn. Two year old thoroughbreds, particularly taller ones like Optimus, always have issues balancing themselves, even around a wide turn like on a track. Lily helped balance the colt with a combination of leg to hand and the colt moved into a quick click. Lily grinned now as the explosive speed began to turn on. It was just thrilling and Optimus had no idea. He was just doing his job and what he loved. Horses could be so simple.
Lily eased on the rein slightly out of the turn and the bay colt used his powerful backend to power forward. The wind ripping, the two tore to the finish line and Lily couldn't help but laugh outwardly. The finish line came way too fast for Lily's tastes, she wanted to ride longer but knew that Optimus didn't need the schooling right now. The difference between him on the track alone and with other horses was astounding and Lily knew in her heart that other horses could be Optimus' downfall.
She sat up and leaned back, slowing the colt. His strength was overpowering so it took quite a while for the 4'11 jockey to get the large colt to stop. Once he did, she sighed lightly, patting his sweaty neck. The colt didn't slow, he kept a brisk walk up and Lily rolled her eyes. Oh Optimus....
