Tears No More was finally back in action after his long lay off. He had been having swimming sessions and horse walker sessions for several weeks and he had gathered up all his strength. The colt was now ready to take on the Breeders’ Cup, but before he could do so there was one last race that Jacey wanted him in before, to prove that the grade three two year old colt was ready for his big challenge ahead. He would be entered in the eight-furlong monthly juvenile contest over the dirt, to prove that he was ready to take it all on if he was going to go to the Breeders Cup World Championships.
He currently had two contenders ready to face him. Trouble’s lay off had done him good, and coming back straight away to try and take on the contenders would be fairly easy with his full level of fitness. He had grown considerably and even though his twin sister hadn’t started yet, Jacey hoped that she could make just a good impression as he did as a two year old. She was starting late as she got injured in a workout in January, but that was in the past now. Ivana was Trouble’s jockey, and she loved him to bits. He was a beautiful colt and he had matured into something spectacular.
Jacey was desperate to get the colt another win under his belt before the Breeders’ Cup after his last win in the Frizette was back in July. She had kept the colt off to mature after the Eagle Cup in September Week Four, which Crowned Queen took the victory from right under his nose, as well as Reflected In Water, the up and coming two year old filly who he was also against in his race tomorrow. This meant that he would have to work hard to beat the filly again who had been in action since the race.
Ivana hoped that Jacey giving the colt a long lay off was a good thing. She didn’t want him to go downhill after it, but she knew that if he carried on, he would be amazing.
Reflected In Water would start in Gate One. She was a fantastic filly, with four wins under her belt at the moment. She had been off since November, after her performances in the Just A Trot Futurity and the AJC Sires Produce Stakes. She also ran a second the week before, but her three weeks of racing in a row meant that she couldn’t quite match up to them in the Turf Challenge. It meant Nature Blue were doing what they could to try and prepare her for the Breeder’s Cup. The filly was a preceder. She would linger in behind Trouble.
Gate Two would hold Trouble. The race would be fast pace, but if Trouble could pull it off, he would be going to the Breeders’ Cup.
Ivana mounted up onto the colt and tightened his girth after she did so. Smiling, she walked him out onto the dirt and looked around, watching as the other horses breezed through the stretch. She warmed Trouble up after a few laps of walk and then began to trot round the outside of the track, staying out of harms way. After a trot, they broke into a steady canter and drifted slowly to the inside rail. Ivana stood in her stirrups and Trouble's canter stayed collected.
As they rounded the bend, she began to pick up the speed and he breezed through the home stretch. He kept the pace as he rounded the bend back onto the home stretch.
Ivana kept it steady and thought about what she was going to do next. Slowly but surely, she released the grip on her reins and he began to speed up a little bit. Rounding the bend, Ivana took her crop from her belt and tapped Trouble. He leapt into a high speed gallop as he entered the stretch. His ears were pricked as he sailed through the stretch, his long legs covering the dirt with his tremendous stride.
As they came through the final furlong, he extended his stride even more before crossing the wire and relaxing.
Ivana pulled him up and cooled him off before walking him back to the barn. The race tomorrow would be tough but Trouble was more than ready for it, especially after the late scratch of Anodyne. It would be tough but Trouble being himself would push himself to the limit and do anything for Ivana, even though he was trouble himself.
