Horse: Mardi Gras
Rider: Lucy McCummins
For: End of Year Juvenile Dirt - December Week 3
Lucy was glad to have some more 2 year olds in her barn. Elise was the first one she went to. She wanted to see what the big girl was made of. Reaching her stall, the big black filly looked fierce. Her height overtook the others. Her muscles quivered as she stood in a back corner of her stall. Lucy stood at the door a while, taking in the beauty.
She soon had her tacked and ready to go. She rode her out to the dirt oval. Elise was ready to go. She danced sideways, nostrils flared. Lucy took her through the opening, giving her full view of the stretch of dirt ahead of them. Elise raised her head and sniffed at the air. She was ready to run, again. She was ready for the freedom. It had been a long while since she had raced. She settled nicely into her new home.
Lucy gave her a little rein, letting her stretch herself out a little. They started at a steady collected canter. Elise kept her head high and obeyed every command Lucy gave her. It was just them on the track, which is what Lucy wanted. She didn't want any distractions for the powerful filly. She kept the blinkers off, knowing they wouldn't have to worry about any other horses on the track.
Elise was roaring to go. Lucy could feel her bunched up underneath her. She stayed quiet and steady, not letting the filly get away from her too much. Elise quivered beneath her. She was ready to go. Once they reached the 10 furlong marker Lucy urged her to a full-on gallop. Elise had similar racing style as Quizzical. They were closers. She liked to hold back in the beginning of the race. As they rounded the turn, Lucy urged her further more. The filly responded and extended out, throwing more speed into her gallop.
The stretch came quickly, they were blazing down the track. Lucy didn't have to give the filly much rein. She knew what she was doing. She let her go. Elise thundered down the stretch, anxious to get to the finish. She didn't want to stop running, though. She could've run across the country if she could. This is what she lived for. She could run for days and never get tired.
Lucy was satisfied with her run. She pulled her down to a trot to cool her out. Elise was barely breathing hard. She was still calm and ready to do what Lucy wanted. Lucy reached down and patted her on the neck. They went around the track once. Then, walked out a few furlongs before Lucy rode her back to the barns. She knew Elise was ready. She couldn't wait to see what the filly could do on the track.
