Silver Lining
Something Silver
A sharp jerk on the reins nearly sent Andrew out of the saddle, this horse really did have way too much energy for his own good. Even after a very long warm up Ace still had enough energy for a field of five horses combined.
“Easy boy!” Andrew called out, but that didn’t stop Ace from offering a small buck. He still wondered why he agreed to ride this horse, Ace was a handful for even an experienced jockey. Then he thought again of how earlier that week he saw the horse breezing, tugging at the reins and fighting the bit the whole way around the track, at first when he was asked by Steve to be the horses regular jockey he almost considered saying no. Ace was tall, scrawny, and feisty. The horse was clearly green but after a few times of working with him he started to understand his job, and Andrew started to understand the horse. There was one thing that Andrew knew for sure, the horse had talent. If only Ace would learn to control himself he would be one heck of a race horse.
“Alright, take it easy,” Andrew spoke to the tall scrawny bay horse he sat upon, Ace’s ear flicked back to hear what Andrew was saying. That was when Andrew clicked his tongue and Ace lunged forward, the acceleration was instant.
Doing as instructed Andrew held back Ace allowing him to become somewhat comfortable, and soon the rhythm of hoof beats and breaths was the only thing that Andrew heard. Wind whipped through Ace’s hair, which Andrew observed by how it brushed his face almost constantly, needed to be trimmed. Ace approached the home stretch, and Andrew found it hard to believe that the workout was more than half over.
“Alright boy, let’s see what you got,” Andrew muttered to Ace and drew the whip, a simple tap to the hip and Ace was flying down the home stretch, this horse could still take his breath away, just the feeling of his acceleration and how quickly it happens, and how long he can continue to accelerate.
The pair flew past the wire, and Ace gave a snort. There was nothing this horse rejoiced more than running.
