Dora fought hard with her rider as they trotted towards the starting gate. Hot air blew from Dora's nostrils in the cold morning air. She was steady on her toes and had a fire burning in her eyes. She was ready to make her debut on the Green Horse Fields dirt track. The track was slightly muddy from overnight rainfall. Dora loved the slop. She could handle it sloppy or dry. She was an incredible racehorse.
Taylor and her assistant, Natalie, who was co-owner of Blue Haven, were standing at the rail. Taylor had a stopwatch in her hands. They watched intently as Dora and her rider were loaded into the gate. The filly went in with ease. She handled the gates very well. She was well trained as a weanling and yearling so, she had no fear of the starting gate.
They waited patiently. Dora stomped a hoof, anxious for the chutes to open. The clanking sound did her no harm. She shot out of the chute almost automatically, leaving the bell ringing behind her. She dug her heels into the clayish ground as she pushed on down the track. Her rider sat in wait as she let Dora run on her own. She wanted the filly to get a feel for the surface.
The stretch was where Dora excelled. She was a ball of energy. Her leads changed beautifully and her speed increased as she came upon the open stretch. The rider took out her whip, using it just a little while. The filly was done gone down for her run. She passed the wire with plenty of energy left inside. She didn't even break a sweat.
The rider cooled her out and rode her over to Taylor and Natalie. Both girls had a small clapping session. "Incredible", was all Taylor could say. She was happy with her filly. She had raised Dora since she was a foal. Taylor was Dora's only mother since her real mother abandoned her. They were the best of friends. Dora was going to have an incredible streak on the track. Taylor knew it.
