Path to Freedom
Immortal Flight and Passion Heart
Jessie and Alex walked their horses onto green horse fields track. Both of the mounts where new additions to Grayson Meadows, and new to their current riders. Andrew was originally scheduled as both of their regular jockeys but he had opted to ride White Rose instead, with more experience with the bay filly could you really blame him?So Steve decided on having Alex ride Passion Heart, she could use an experienced rider and had a nasty attitude that Alex knew how to deal with. He would be able to get her to settle down and pace herself enough to giver her a chance to win.
Jessie was placed on Immortal Flight because Immortal Flight could benefit from a younger more energetic rider. Wherever he wanted to be Jessie would be determined guide him around the track to victory.
Ally tossed her head as they approached the gate, Alex had worked a little with her earlier in the week on gate schooling, but the mare just flat out hated the gate. Kicking the front and causing all kinds of ruckus before she was in the gate. There was one advantage to this little quirk though, the nearly pure black mare couldn't wait to get out of that gate. She fired out of the gates like a bullet fired from a gun. Enjoying the free space to run wherever she pleased.
Nico easily went into the gate, the big bay didn't mind it at all. Which was odd, considering he was 17.2 hands, and was by no means a small horse. Most larger horses would get claustrophobic in the gate, but not Nico. His intelligent eyes swept over everything, as if he owned the track. Once they finally got Ally in the gate; the two gave each other a good long stare.
The gates flashed open and the two lunged off of their hind legs getting into stride very quickly. Ally broke on top and started with a good half a length lead on Nico. She looked so much smaller next to him, seeing as he was a whole hand taller.
The bay and the nearly pure black mare quickly fell into rhythm with each other, matching breaths, matching strides. Everything seemed to be in perfect sync. Their heads bobbed up and down together. From a front view, it might look like they were marching like a group of soldiers.
Turf flew in every direction in their wake. Each stride bigger and bigger as they finished around the far turn turning into the homestretch.
Jessie drew the whip first, but not to use it. He clicked his tongue and whistled to Nico. He gave the horse his head so he could extend himself further, the response was nearly immediate and the two drew a good length and a half away from Alex and Ally. Nico’s strides became larger and larger, quicker and quicker. His height did come in as a massive advantage, his legs were so long that his stride was much larger than Ally’s. However, that would never stop the black mare from seeping into Jessie’s peripheral vision.
Alex waved the whip past Ally and the mares ears perked forwards, her legs stretched out and collected beneath her body smoothly. She was gaining ground on Nico with each stride.
The two battled it out right down to the wire, where Nico won by a neck.
It didn't matter who won the work, the important thing was that the two were both major forces to be reckoned with in the May Turf Stakes.
