Unlikely Pair
My Kingdom Come and Handsome Tabby
The two jockey's trotted the chestnut stallion and steel gray filly out onto Green Horse Fields turf tack in the early morning sunrise. The grey tossed her head a few times and each stride she took was a little over exaggerated, not only in length but in the amount of bounce. She had such beautiful confirmation, her muscles were weaved together perfectly, everything just fit in the exact right place. She was built a bit more like a colt than a filly, although she was a small 15.3 hands.
The chestnut stallion followed quietly behind, he was larger than the steel gray filly at 17 hands, and two years older. He was equally as graceful, but in a different way. He hung his head and walked along quietly dropping his head, and the most energetic thing he did was chomp on his bit a little. He acted a little like he owned the tack, not in a cocky way though.
Despite their differences, the two horses were completely bonafide race horses in their own right. The steel grey, My Kingdom Come was a 2 year old filly attempting to break her maiden, and the chestnut, Handsome Tabby, a G3 four year old stallion coming off of a win in the Algid Stakes.
A maiden and a G3 thoroughbred, one 2 years old, the other 4. It was an unlikely pair, considering one was a sprinter while the other more of a miler.
“She’s ready to go,” Andrew commented, humor dripping off of his tongue.
“She usually doesn’t have this much energy.” Alex responded, and the two laughed a little as they approached the gate.
My Kingdom Come’s next race was the Incarnadine Maiden, at 8 furlongs. As of now, there was only one other entrant, and that was Criss Cross, a white filly with a nice record of her own, just like Bay, she had ran in a stakes race and then a maidens, another Grayson Meadows runner, Girl Talk had beaten her to break her maiden the week before. Criss Cross was a frount runner so Bay would have it easy this time around. Their strategy was simple, Bay could sit behind Criss Cross or push her the whole mile. Alex had learned a lot about the steel gray filly from his last ride on her and he was ready to get her that win to become a grade five horse.
Handsome Tabby on the other hand had just won the Algid Stakes at Green Horse Fields, May week 3. Andrew was assigned to the stallion with hopes of getting him to keep winning. He was learning more and more about the Chestnut everyday, and he was certain the stallion would do well. The stallion was doing well off of his winand was ready to turn in his final workout for the G3 Venus Stakes at Green Horse Fields. The field was a smaller one, as of now, there were only three entrants, Grayson Meadows’ very own Immortal Flight, who hadn’t been doing very well all season, and Apollo Bear, who had just won a HOTY race in the Summer Cup G3 Turf, the field was shaping up to be a bit more challenging than the last, but Tabs was going to be ready. There was going to be pace with Apollo Bear, Tabs was going to have to push Apollo Bear for a good 6 furlongs before making his move, but he would need to watch out for Immortal Flight, because his stable mate could run anywhere in a race.
Both of the horses went into the gate easily, and they were all set to start their final work before their races.
The gates burst open and the two pushed off of their powerful hind legs, and after six strides they were at top speed. Head in head, stride in stride the horses jogged easily in each others company. Tabs poked a nose in front, but Bay pushed him further, she wasn’t going to let him get away from her.
Their breaths matched in perfect sync, and rounding the far turn Andrew let Tabs lose. Tabs began to pull away, but he never expected the steel gray filly to come flying on his outside. Both extended themselves, stretching their strides more and more, sticking their noses out to get a possible lead.
They hit the wire together, Alex nor Andrew could tell who was first.
“Photo finish!” Alex smiled patting his filly.
“Yeah right, we all know Tabs won.” Andrew replied.
