RED HERRING && SAMMIE PICKETT
COCO CABANA && DEVON BLACKTHORN
Firestone had a massive list of horses entered in the Seaspray Cup for July Week One. The two entries somewhat close in size and speed were Red Herring and Coco Cabana. Although Red was at a much higher caliber than Coco at this time, it would be for a great workout for the pair. Red had been worked throughout his month off, only having light jogs and gallops to help keep him in shape. Coco’s last race had been the Preakness and he had done well finishing fourth, not the result Carter was hoping for but he would take it against the higher classed. This would be his chance to work his best before the race.
The workout would only be at 6 furlongs to save their energy for the 10 furlong race that awaited them. Carter didn't waste any time getting them warmed up on the soft dirt. He had other horses to watch today and this was just the first bunch of them. He had all of the two year olds grouped together after this. Gated, the two Thoroughbreds waited patiently for the bell and once they heard it, the race was on. Red dashed out to take the lead, his pace above average but not really overly fast, and Coco took his place just behind him, in his typical closer position. Red galloped on confidently in the lead, making no move to run faster, just like Sammie wanted. Devon kept the bay stallion close to Red’s rump as they made their way around the first turn. The pair was only three furlongs from the post when Devon made his move on Coco, pushing the colt hard. His pace picked up and he pressed on in order try to maneuver around Red, but the older stallion wasn’t having it. He trucked on, catching the win by a length over the rising bay colt.
