SIREN CALL && DEVON BLACKTHORN
DARK MAIDEN && TALIA SMITH
SPEAK EASY && JOHNNY GARNER
It was always great to see powerful horses facing one another on the track, Carter thought, and the Seaspray Cup was no exception, it would definitely be a tough bunch of races. Carter had three two year olds entered in 3 separate races, the Maiden Sprint, Grade Four Sprint and Grade Five. The three horses were ready for their respective races. They had been eager as they had been led down to the track, the competitive spirit sparking between all three. Siren Call had the most experience, already reaching her Grade Four status early. Speak Easy had thundered on to claim his Grade Five status and poor Dark Maiden had not gotten her G5 rate yet despite placing in every one of her starts. All had been loaded with ease, their jockeys probing one another with cheeky insults. Devon and Johnny ganged up on the Talia but she just shook her head and laughed it off. All had fallen silent; the atmosphere thick with tension as they waited for the bell to sound. The gates opened and the race was on.
Mai being a front runner naturally moved into the lead. She had a confident air, and Talia guided her to the rail as they moved powerfully forwards. Behind them, Siren had taken up a slightly slower pace and allowed the filly and colt to pull ahead. Johnny held Sonny back, preventing him from moving up onto Mai’s flank too early as they powered up the dirt track. Siren didn’t like the dirt that was being kicked up in front of her so Devon took her to the outside early. Sonny’s ears pressed forwards as they moved onwards.
As they moved through the main body of their mock race things remained the same. Siren ran behind Sonny, who ran behind Mai, as they slowly closed the distance which had grown behind them. Talia glanced behind her, flashed a grin at the two boys and then turned back to the track, during the mare forwards a little.
It was time for Siren to shine. She wasn’t going to let a lower graded horse beat her and Devon felt it. Siren and Sonny were quickly closing in, and soon drew up to the side of the filly. Her ears pinned against her skull and, head on head on head, the threesome battled. None of the horses seemed willing to give way to the others as they moved down the final few furlongs. Every time one seemed to gain the upper hand the other would pull back. The battle was ferocious, the competitive spirit clear within the three equines as they soared past the post. Siren had literally won by half a nose, with Sonny and Mai pressed up against either sides of her. It was quite clear that they were ready to give the Seaspray a real shot.
