Cut Em' Loose
Silver Lining and Andrew Martin
Lime Light and Jessie Coppermen
Jessie Coppermen walked his lazy chestnut colt onto the dirt track at The Wire. Since Honorary had graded up and Steve decided it would be best for the dapple grey filly to run against some older horses to increase her experience in workouts, Lime had been left workmate-less. Not that Jessie could blame him, he had gotten a little tired of Honorary using Lime as a confidence booster, the colt clearly hadn't been able to keep up with the fiery filly.
Lime had a rather unobtrusive record, with only one win a place, and four out of money finishes Lime was completely off everyone’s radar. And to be honest the colt didn't show any signs of improving. Lime was slowly figuring out what he was supposed to do with himself. Most of the reason was that the horse was lazy. So lazy, that he probably rivaled a 900 pound man who could barely move because he was so fat. Oh and the colt hadn't gained muscle mass, no he gained weight. Everyone knew the reason for that too, because when Lime wasn't eating, he was sleeping. It was a pain to even get the horse onto the track sometimes. As a matter of fact, Sam swore up and down that if they gelded him he would probably become lazier.
Despite all of this, Lime was definitely a one of a kind horse. He may frustrate everyone at Grayson Meadows to the end of the universe, but at the end of the day, no horse could ever replace Lime.
Lime wouldn't run in awhile, he was on something of a reprieve from racing, even though he really didn't need it. It was unknown of when his next race would be run, mostly because they needed to find a field that Lime could handle.
So while Lime lost his workmate, he gained another one, and that was the hot-headed Silver Lining,
Ace also frustrated Team Grayson Meadows to no end, mostly because he had so much potential and he seemed to be unable to tap into it just yet. He was fast, and one heck of a competitor on a good day, but for every good day he had, there was 20 bad ones that seemed to follow. Ace loved nothing more than showing off, and once he figured out that he could show off by winning instead of bucking or sweating like crazy in the paddock wasn't the best way to show off.
Ace also had a rather un-flasy record, with a place and two shows with three more out of money placings, he was in the same boat as Lime.
However there were several noticeable differences between the two of them, Lime walked calmly onto the track, whereas Ace bolted and was jumping all over the place, working himself up to the point that he was already sweating with his tongue sticking out and swinging side to side. Steve had finally decided to put a tongue tie on Ace and they were all hoping for improvement, adding blinkers on him would hopefully also make a nice adjustment too.
Lime was fat with some muscles, where Ace was skinny and built like a swan, with a well muscled frame but not muscular enough for it to make an effect on how skinny he was just by his build. He had the long back of a miler and a beautifully put together frame.
He was still only a maiden, but he was one heck of a flashy horse. He may not be on anyone's radar now, but he was improving. The improvement may not be rapid, but it was coming along a bit quicker than Lime's.
Ace's next race would be coming up in July week 2, a seven furlong maiden at Green Horse Fields against a newbie by the name of Against The Odds. Steve was confident that Ace could beat the older horse who had zip experience, and Andrew was going to do his best to make that happen.
Ace and Andrew approached the gate and loaded like a pro despite being all worked up and tense. Ace was ready to go, and Lime decided to hold at the start, they had worked with him a lot on gating but Lime still refused to go in without someone shoving on his butt to get him in. With some prodding the assistant starters managed to get Lime into the gate.
There wasn't much delay after that, the gates burst open just seconds after Lime loaded and Ace leaped onto the lead. There was no delay, Ace already had a two length lead on Lime. Andrew had attempted to slow him down, but Ace was locked in and would have much rather left Lime in the dust then slow down to let Lime catch up. It appeared that the blinkers had helped focus Ace more, the colt was willingly responding to every single command Andrew gave him.
Lime and Jessie logged behind and the back behind Ace as the colt set a very quick pace that Lime wasn't comfortable running this early and Jessie was pushing him to go faster than he already would willingly go.
Ace strided into the final turn taking up massive amounts of ground with every stride already lengthening. Andrew couldn't help but smile, Ace had a lot left in the tank, and would likely hold off the closing Lime. Andrew glanced behind him to see Lime a good five lengths behind.
“Alright Ace, lets take Lime down and show him up. Make him pay for every time he's finished ahead of you.” Andrew said to Ace and the bay's ear flicked back.
Andrew let up a little on the reins allowing Ace to accelerate, Lime would have to start closing now if he even wanted to so much as finish a length behind Ace. And it appeared that Jessie knew it too, because Andrew started to see a black/brown nose starting to make it's way into his peripheral vision. Andrew allowed Jessie to start closing in on Ace with Lime. As soon as Lime got about at Ace's neck and they had turned onto the homestretch Andrew let up on his hold on Ace and waved the whip on his right side. Ace dug his hooves into the dirt and left Lime in his wake quickly pulling away from him in just a matter of three strides.
Jessie tapped Lime with the whip and pushed the colt faster and faster but he couldn't keep up with his fleeting stablemate today.
Ace crossed the wire three lengths ahead of his stablemate, and Andrew smiled. Ace was ready to take Against The Odds down, and do it with authority. Jessie and Lime flew past the wire, regardless of the fact that Lime had lost, Jessie was still sure it was a solid work, he had pushed Lime a lot quicker than he normally would have. However, with that in mind, Jessie couldn't help but think that Lime wasn't giving them his all and there may be hope for him yet.
