Full Flight
Tears of Blood and Alex Shade
Attractive Flight and Andrew Martin
Andrew pulled his mount away from Happy for about the fiftieth time that mourning. Matty wouldn’t leave Happy alone for the life of him, and that made Happy all the more grouchy at Matty. It only took one little nibble at his neck to set Happy off in a frenzy of anger towards the son of Flying Colors. The whole time through warm ups Happy had held his head high with his ears slicked to the back of his skull.
Matty on the other hand was having a good old time, arching his head and leaping all over the place in a spirited way. He stood taller than his chestnut stablemate, at 16.2 hands, but height meant nothing to Happy.
Tanner and Steve sat in the stands, watching with a keen eye as the two Grayson Meadows trainees warmed up. Attractive Flight was a new edition to Grayson Meadows, and he returned a third place finish in the G3 Ocean Cup at Green Horse Fields just two weeks ago. Steve figured what better way to whip Matty into shape and inspire him to win then to put him up against Grayson Meadows’ best sprinter, Tears Of Blood. Both stallions favored the dirt, and both favored sprints, it was a perfect match.
Happy still had his ears somewhat pinned and flared his nostrils, the whites of his eyes were visible, but it wasn’t from fear, it was from determination.
The bay and the chestnut loaded into the gates without a problem and they shot out relatively slowly, but Happy came out on top and lead by a head on the rail. Matty followed quickly and never let Happy get more than a head ahead of him. Alex and Andrew soon had their mounts under control and workout was well underway.
Neither Happy nor Matty were front runners, or mid pack horses, they were both closers and the work got off to a rather slow start. Matty nudged his nose ahead of Happy, but Happy decided he wouldn’t have any of it and thrust himself a head in front of Matty. They battled back and forth for awhile, and Andrew ended up just holding Matty back to prevent from completely wearing the colt out.
Happy continued to lead going into the final turn, he was barely out of breath and Alex smirked, Happy was going to explode by the end of the final turn, and Matty was breathing heavily. Dirt flew in their wake as they blended into the final turn and turned into the open home stretch.
Alex let up his hold on Happy and the stallion bolted away from Matty. Alex just hand rode him down the stretch, occasionally looking in the crook between his shoulder and knee to see how far Happy had demolished his stablemate.
Andrew pushed Matty hard down the stretch, tapping his hindquarters a few times and waving the whip to get the colt to fire, and he did, but he wasn’t catching Happy today, who had cleared him by five lengths already.
Happy hit the wire with nothing but fire and determination in his eyes. Matty followed him just five lengths behind him.
