COCO CABANA && DEVON BLACKTHORN
RED HERRING && SAMMIE PICKETT
The rain had not let up one bit as the next pair made their way to the mud pit called dirt track. Coco Cabana was only two wins away from being a Grade Four, but had been on a fourth place losing streak for ages. Carter couldn't understand why though, the bay colt's pedigree outclassed most of his competition. His dam was Hall of Famer Fleet Goddess, a Grade One mare who won the DUBAI WORLD CUP in Y8, BC Juvenile Fillies in Year 7, the BC Ladies Classic in Year 8 and again the following year (Y9). Carter knew he had the class and the speed, and jockey Devon had the determination behind them which could help them to succeed. Red was already a grade one, and one of Firestone’s most prized possessions. He was entered in all of the Senior Superstars Series races in hopes to win the title.
Loaded into the gates, the two colts seemed fired up and ready to run. Red had his ears pinned against his head, the fiery look in his eyes were set on the track. Devon was determined to win after their streak of placing fourth, and he was sick of losing. Coco seemed a lot calmer and didn’t pick up on his rider’s anxiety. He was stood perfectly still, his ears pressed forwards as he waited for the gates to open, which happened quickly.
With no definite leader, Red threw himself into the lead with a quick break and set into a high pace while Coco left the gates slowly, settling behind the red stallion and took a slightly slower pace. Mud pelted into their faces, but it didn't faze Coco and as they moved closer to the end of the workout.
The final stretch was soon upon them. Coco and Devon were a length behind Red and Sammie as both jockeys cracked their whips against their rides' rumps. Driving hard, the two horses reacted to the knowledge that the run was almost over with a surge of speed. Coco, who had preserved more energy, experienced a greater rush than Red and as they neared the post. Unfortunately the red stallion didn’t want to let up as he kept in front of Coco, beating him out by a neck.
