You Don’t Scare Me
Allouette Divine and Jessie Coppermen
Chatoyant and Andrew Martian
Divie nibbled on Sam’s shoulder as he finished up tightening the bay filly’s cinch. It was a cooler morning, fog laid over the track and you could see the wisps of horses breath in the air.
Andrew sat atop Tayo waiting for Jessie to get on Divie. They were already behind schedule for the day because Divie was spending so much time prancing around in the barn, it took them at least five minutes to get her out and ready. Tanner wasn’t going to be pleased with them, but hey, they did their best.
“Run them for a mile, breeze for four furlongs,” Steve repeated to them, “don’t go too fast and wear them out before they even run their races.”
“Whatever you say boss,” Andrew said in a joking tone as Steve gave Jessie a leg up on Divie.
They took their mounts out on the track and started their warm ups over Green Horse Fields dirt track. Tayo behaved himself quite nicely, however Divie offered playful bucks here and there, the filly was so excited to be back out on the track. Jessie often wondered what could get his happy go lucky sprinting star down, and nothing really came to mind.
Divie was coming off of a major efforts in all of the triple sprinter crown races. She beat out Optimus Unstoppable in the Red Wine Sprint* and the Speedway Stakes*. Her impressive results not only solidified her as a real threat to the sprinter division, but made her a common household name. Although it was in some way against everything Jessie thought was right, he’d kind of enjoyed being a thorn in Ripley and Brookson’s sides in every race they met up.
Divie had lost the Speedway Stakes* to this years Derby winner and narrowly got up for a second place finish. However, Divie was as well. Her mind, although scattered when not running, was perfectly set in the place they all wanted it to be, on winning. Her determination to outrun her foes was what made her such a great runner, she had grit, and she wasn’t scared to use it. Her next stop was another match up against Alucard, who would be frustrated from countless losses and Jessie would have to watch his back if Divie was going to take this one.
Tayo on the other had was out for redemption after a 4th place finish against horses he really should have beat. Andrew had been working with him all week on bursting speed and they were going to do their best to make sure that bad of a finish never happened again. His next stop was the Smart Halo Stakes* the sole other entrent Silent Snap would cause problems for him. Silent Snap was a frontrunner and Tayo would need to stay close enough but not too close in order to catch him in the stretch. The colt needed a good tune up before facing off against Sun King again.
Divie and Jessie lead the way to the gates, Tayo and Divie loaded without an issue and they both broke cleanly to start their workout. Tayo had a bit more early speed and took the lead, Divie followed a half length behind on the rail. Going onto the backstretch the pace quickened, Divie wanted to test and push a little at Tayo and Tayo refused to give up the lead. Tayo had a head ahead of Divie and the two were quickly in a rhythm that no one was willing to break until they had to. Their hooves made staccato sounds against the dirt and they sent it flying in their wake. They passed several other working horses while they were at it too. They were going quick, but that was the purpose of the work.
Coming into the homestretch Divie bore down hard on her workmate, she ruthlessly flew past Tayo and tore off down the stretch. However, her attempt to leave Tayo in the dust wasn’t going to work, Tayo fired after Divie and put his nose in front of Divie. Divie didn’t like this at all and dug in deep, unleashing yet another gear of speed, but Tayo refused to lose and insisted on staying right with his workmate. However, in the end it was Divie who won by a head. No doubt about it though, they were both ready for whatever Alucard and Silent Snap were going throw at them.
