September Week 4 Workout
Rider: Lucy McCummins
Lucy tightened the girth of the big bay colt. Rascal was an intimidating sight. He picked at the ground with his hooves and let out an anxious snort. She placed a pat to his hindquarters and reached her helmet. After placing the bridle over his head, he was ready to head out to the track.
It was quite foggy out as they walked to the dirt course. Rascal sniffed at the cool air. Lucy quickly zipped up her windbreaker, knowing the colt could break off at any time. He was a slow starter, but he sure could pack a punch at the end of a race. He was a strong closer with a huge determination. He was still young and inexperienced, but she knew he would get a good start here at Green Horse Fields.
Rascal trotted along the outside rail elegantly. His head bowed and his stride lengthy. He looked like a champion already. He was well built and looked like he was much older. He still had his immature side. He was still a baby to many. To Lucy he was a future champion. Then. in the far future he would lay as stud. He had an exceptional future ahead of him.
Lucy clucked him up to a canter. His leads transitioned beautifully. He was more and more relaxed as they went. He was a phenomenal colt. Lucy was becoming attached to him. He was one whom she swore she would never part with. He would be the only one she would bring in with an unknown background. Other than that, she wanted some good lines to flow through the stable.
Rascal snapped his rider from her daydreaming. "Sorry boy. I need to pay attention to you." she said. She reached down to stroke his neck. He continued on at a strong canter. She needed to get him into a race. She needed to build his experience so he would be fresh and ready for his 3 year old season, which was really only a few months away.
Lucy turned him towards the inside rail. Rascal knew he would soon be ready to flaunt his stuff. There were onlookers at the rail. It seemed everyone came out to see the new horse from Lucy's new stable. She waved to her fellow friends and turned her attention back to Rascal.
A starting gate was set up at the 7 furlong marker. It wasn't his distance but it would be a perfect start for him since it was just a workout. He balked slightly as the gate man attempted to load him. Rascal threw his head up and did sort of a half rear. Lucy held on and stroked his neck. "It's okay handsome." He settled a little. Then he loaded with ease.
Now, it was time for the wait. Lucy tightened her grip on the reins. She could feel the ball of energy tensing up under her. He was ready for the explosion. She turned to their spectators. They had their phones out, going to film this prideful moment. She couldn't help but smile. She was glad to have her friends out to support her and watch what this new colt had to offer.
The gates opened and Rascal surged forward. He pulled himself onward. They were practically flying down the backstretch. The colt hugged the rail the entire way. It was his favorite spot to be. They headed into the turn. Lucy loosened the reins, giving command for the colt to edge on faster. He obeyed and dashed around the turn.
Once he saw the stretch opening he opened up even more. They thundered down the straight away. Lucy flashed the ship and he jumped into another gear and headed on to the finish line. He was full force. On and on he went. He didn't let up as they dashed past the finish line. Lucy patted his neck. "That was an awesome run." she said. He had a great future ahead of him. Everyone needed to beware of the Rascal.
