RELIANCE - ISABELLE NOTTINGHAM
ADELAIDE - KALLIE SULLIVAN
HANDSOME TABBY - MAVERICK HARRIS
It was a drizzly day as the three horses passed through the barn on the way out to the breezing track. Each had a very different personality. And each had a very different rider. The dark bay’s groom struggled to keep control of the colt as he side stepped and threatened to bolt. Sawyer swore and tugged on his bit to keep Reliance paying attention. Ry swung his head around and almost took a chunk out of his handler, just a show of dominance on his part. He did not like waiting, and his two other partners were doing just that.
Adelaide was the next to follow the rouge out of the barn. In stark contrast to her fellow maiden, her head was down and she had long, lazy strides. Kallie patted the mare affectionately. She was fond of this little mare more than a lot of the other horses. There was just something about her calm demeanor that disguised her age. After all, she was only a two year old. Kallie had watched Maverick maneuver the filly around the track at break-neck speeds. It always awed her to watch Addie run. However, today she got to experience the mare run. Today would be the first day Kallie had ever been on Adelaide. Felicity, the barn’s owner, said that if they did well, she might just permanently jockey the filly. They’d gained a bunch of horses in the past month so Mav and Bella had their hands full. Kallie grinned as she led the mare to the track behind Sawyer and Reliance.
Handsome Tabby was the last to come out of the barn. The chestnut paused as he walked out and studied the yard. His eyes were wide with excitement, but yet the senior racer did not get riled up like some of his companions. Maverick clucked to the big stallion and followed the other two up to the course. He glanced behind him once to make sure Bella was on her way. She’d by jockeying Reliance, as usual.
The riders warmed up the horses a few laps before heading over to the starting gates. They weren’t as fancy as the official gates, but they worked for training and refreshers. Usually they just breezed the horses without them, but Felicity knew Adelaide had some breaking faults that she needed to work on. So in essence of a mock race, they brought up Tabs and Ry to help out.
Sawyer and another groom helped load the horses in before waiting for the racers to settle down. It took a few minutes as Reliance insisted on pawing destructively at the open bars in the front. After a few sharp words from Bella, Ry settled enough for Sawyer to yank open the gates.
The horses sprung out, with Handsome Tabby settling in the lead. Reliance found his spot as preceder and Adelaide took the rear. She had managed to break without a stumble and Kallie was relieved, she might just grow out of that habit.
The horses rounded the first bend without any contention. They happened to make the three perfect breezing buddies. Everyone had a spot and no one was fighting, yet. When it came down to the wire, however, it would be a fight.
They went another few furlongs before Reliance started making his move. He inched closer to Tabs and had come even with his shoulder. Tabby was not going to give up without a fight, he’d make the younger colt work for it.
They rounded the last bend before Adelaide made her move. Kallie clucked and the mare sprang into action. Seeing no hole, she swung to the outside of the two colts and took off. The other two were beginning to wear out and she used it to her advantage. Her long strides easily ate up the distance between them and she took the lead. Reliance and Tabs were still fighting as they crossed the wire.
Adelaide had won by a few lengths, and in the end Handsome Tabby took second by a nose. Reliance, still fighting, pulled up reluctantly in third. Bella grinned and congratulated Kallie. She likes you! I wouldn’t doubt that from that performance, Felicity will ask you to ride her more often! Kallie smiled back and patted Addie on the neck. Things were finally looking up for her.
