DAYDREAM && KALLIE SULLIVAN
HANDSOME TABBY && MAVERICK HARRIS
Today was the day of Tabs and Rea’s preparation for GHF’s Winter Cup. Both horses showed huge potential and October Week Four was going to be a big week for both of them. This would be Handsome Tabby’s first Horse of the Year race since taking a step back a few months ago. Felicity was curious to see how the big guy would do. Daydream, on the other hand, had already won a HOTY race back in August and was ready to give it another go. Both fields had managed to stay small and the hope was that they would stay small up until starting time.
Kallie was the first to emerge on the track with the bay mare. Rea was sticking true to her calm demeanor and pricked her ears as they spotted their breezing partners appearing in the barn doorway. Mav and Tabs joined them a minute later and both horses warmed up quickly. They would only be doing a short distance of 5 furlongs today. No need to wear out the two right before a big race. Mav and Kallie waited until both horses were warmed up before coming in side by side.
They waited until the horses had settled into a fast pace before calling it a start. Kallie let Daydream go and they stretched out into a gallop. Handsome Tabby was right on her heels in a matter of seconds, his long legs unwinding and stretching out. Each stride covered a massive amount of dirt and they were eating up the distance rather quickly. Tabs, content with his position just behind the bay mare, rounded the corner with less than a stride between them. Maverick was determined to beat Kallie this time as she had beat him last breezing time.
He clucked to the colt and Tabs took off. He closed the distance between him and Daydream. He had just managed to get ahead by a nose when they flew past the five furlong marker.
Mav let out a whoop and hauled Tabs to a walk. Kallie rode up beside him smiling. Next time you won’t be so lucky. We did not have a chance to open up before our distance was gone. She stuck her tongue out at him before they began cooling the horses out.
