Sympathy for the Devil
Passion Heart and Andrew Martin
"Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name"

Ally slammed her teeth down on her bit and looked crazily at Andrew from where Sam was quickly tacking her up. The whites of her eyes could clearly be seen and her ears were prepped in the perfect position to go flat against her skull. Yes ladies and gentlemen, Passion Heart was in full swing today.
“Someone not feed her on time?” Andrew said in an amused tone.
Ally bared her lip up ever so slightly at Sam and he quickly ducked a ferocious bite from the ebony colored mare. She snorted and stomped her hoof down in anger and impatience.
“Expect to be bucked off today, she’s not exactly in what one would call a pleasant mood.” Sam said.
“I’m sure she’ll be just fine,” Andrew replied. “After all, she does like me more than she likes you.” Andrew smirked and Sam stuck his tongue out at Andrew, then proceeded to mutter about why the heck he even still worked for Grayson Meadows.
Andrew took his irritated companion over to a mounting block and swiftly got up on Ally’s back. Which the inky mare responded by quickly sidestepping and nearly throwing Andrew off of her with a well calculated thrust of her hind legs straight into the air. However, she had failed in her attempt and was now being comforted by Andrew’s hand on her neck.
“Aren’t you just the devil today?” He said to her and Ally flicked an irritated ear back at him, “all those losses got you down? Don’t worry girl you’re going to get them I promise, this time they won’t get the better of you.” Andrew had some sympathy for his little devil, as he himself was irritated on his inability to get her to the wire in front of everyone else. Steve had put together ambitious plans for the mare for the end of the season and now wasn’t the time for her to be slowing down.
Andrew trotted Ally out onto the turf track at Green Horse Fields. Everyone had been buzzing about Grayson Meadows getting their own training track and the construction of it was well on it’s way, by next year they could have all of their horses at their barn and not have to transport them every time they needed to be trained.
Ally ducked her head in and lifted her front legs nearly to her chin. She reared up slightly but Andrew quickly repressed her outburst and Ally was left snorting in an irritated tone much like a young child would when a parent reprimanded them. Andrew noted with delight at how well groomed she was, her coat shone like the sun. That is-- if the sun was black. Her muscles rippled powerfully underneath her and her eyes were daggers of fire, they looked malevolent as ever and her ears would become pinned to her head from time to time. Everyone watching Passion Heart work that morning would note that the daughter of Passionate Ruler looked downright menacing and everyone was just waiting for Andrew to get launched from her.
Andrew had run Ally through her warm-ups and decided it would probably be best that they didn’t bother with the gate today.
Once he was sure it was clear he squeezed Ally’s sides gently and the mare just took off. She was striding out powerfully and had started off at blazing speed, but for some reason Andrew felt that she could go faster and decided to let her stay at her quick pace. If she was going to stay ahead of Silver Serendipity and still hold of Night Goddess she was going to need to get off to a quicker start anyways and now onto the back stretch, Ally wasn’t even close to being winded, if anything Andrew felt she could run another twelve furlongs after this one and she could still keep going.
Ally continued her flight over the turf in what Andrew was sure could quite possibly be record timing. He could feel a smile tug across his lips as the final turn drew near. Ally was going to explode like arrow being fired from a bow as soon as the final stretch opened up and he just knew that there was no way she was going to let anything hold her back.
Ally continued to swallow the turf up in massive strides and as the stretch opened up before her she did just what Andrew believed she would. Ally exploded from his hands and he was simply sitting on her enjoying the wind whipping past him and whistling in his ears. He couldn’t help but think Ally was practically saying “please to meet you, you’re going to learn my name” and she was definitely making a name for herself.
They crossed the wire and Andrew was sure that there was nothing standing in her way this week. The November Turf Face-off was Ally’s for the taking.
