ISABELLE NOTTINGHAM && DAYDREAM
MAVERICK HARRIS && FLAMING CONFIDENZA
Be as smart as you can, but remember that it is always better to be wise than to be smart - Alan Alda
The mares seemed to sense there were races coming up when they stepped on the track. Ears were forward and Denza pranced sideways as Mav struggled to keep her at a walk. The palomino filly was raring to go, and it was only a short amount of time before she would become unmanageable. Her last race was a month ago, and after a short break, she was ready for the last of year fourteen. She shook her golden mane and snorted as her breezing partner joined her for the warm up.
Daydream was eerily calm for having a month off. The bay mare perked her ears as soon as she emerged from the barn. Always one for routine, she paused on the track and studied the ring before moving off to join Denza. Her last race was more than five weeks ago, but Dea was never one to be effected by time off. She was rather consistent and never missed a beat.
Bella nodded to Maverick and they began warming up the mares. They had both been regularly worked over their time off and did not need a slow warm up. Before long they were ready to go. They were only going to be running 6 furlongs this morning so they headed for the half mile marker. Denza was going to have trouble keeping up with the older mare in the first couple furlongs, as she was more of a long distance runner than a sprinter.
Like expected, Daydream took the lead quickly while Flaming Confidenza settled just behind her. They floated around the backstretch, galloping easily. Bella held her mount back slightly, not wanting to wear her out too fast. Denza caught up after the fourth furlong and soon the mares were fighting for the lead.
As the approached the six furlong marker, Denza had started to pull ahead slightly. Her breezing partner was not about to give up, however, and she kicked into a faster pace. Soon she had over taken the palomino and flew across the marker with a length lead. The mare seemed to know she had one and tossed her head when Bella pulled her up. Denza was still fighting for her head as Mav pulled her back. Another day they would work longer but for now she just needed a short work to be prepared for her race coming up.
