Just Run
SmashDashing and Hadley Grayson
A True Hero and Jessie Coppermen
It was an exciting day, most of Grayson Meadows’ juveniles made their debuts last week, but not a certain two. The spooky A True Hero and the intelligent SmashDashing.
Hero leaped a few inches off the ground and flashed the whites of his eyes at the water bucket a good ten feet away from him. Anyone that knew this horse would have known that he’d seen the sun hit it in a way that he didn’t exactly like. Or maybe it was the imaginary space aliens chasing him again. Whatever it was, Hero didn’t exactly like it.
Dash on the other hand stood quietly swishing his teeth around in his mouth, undoubtedly still swallowing his breakfast. Dash was the easiest to handle of the two, given you didn’t touch his rump. He’d been the easiest of all of the yearlings to break and it wasn’t hard to see that by looking at him. He seemed to be half asleep and he was shifting his weight from one leg to the other.
Hadley and Jessie quickly walked over to their mounts and Aaron and Steve gave them legs up. Everything seemed to be moving much smoother since Aaron had arrived and there was less hassle involved in getting the horses tacked up for their workouts.
Both of the colts had yet to make their first starts, and this would be their final work before their juvenile debuts. Both were flying under the radar in their own way and both were ready to make a splash on the track. Dash had been putting in bullet works all week and Hero looked more than ready to take on his foes.
Dash’s upcoming maiden had only one other entrant, a unknown and dangerous chestnut horse by the name of Bazinga. It was going to be one of the few horses from the newly opened Riverview Acres. His quicker times and early paces during his workouts suggested the colt may be a preceeder which set Dashing up nicely. Neither would really go for the lead, but Dash would be ready to make a run at Bazinga when his time came and Hadley was fairly confident that she could be the one to make that happen.
Hero would be going up against the well bred Firefall, of course, Hero himself was by two Hall of Famers. He’d be making his debut over the turf, although he’d been working over both surfaces pretty equally all week Steve had chosen the turf for the son of Everyday Hero.Hero was very well set up for his debut. He’d be able to sit behind the quicker pace set by Firefall and unleash an impressive turn of foot when the time came.
The two colts made their way out onto the track, neither displayed the erratic behavior of Passion Heart or the high-strung Daddy’s Overdraft. At most they just ducked their heads and bounced with each step they took, nothing incredibly crazy. Hadley and Jessie ran their mounts through their warm ups without a problem and both took to the gates like champs.
When they sprung open Hero and Dash broke at nearly equal speed, with Hero taking the lead on the outside by a nose. Niether of them seemed in too much of a hurry to push the other and they both stayed that way. Falling into a comfortable step with each other, they nearly mirrored each other's movements. They breathed, stepped and switched leads in near sync. However when the final turn started approaching Dash started to pressure Hero and it was a challenge Hero gladly accepted. They pressed on, speeding up with every stride and breath they took. Soon they were at each others throats, both of them refusing to yield to the other and it ended with Hero on the wire a neck ahead of Dash.
They were ready to make their debuts and make a splash on the track.
