The chestnut colt pulled away from the handlers as they made their way down the path to the track. He was tacked up, warmed up and ready to go. More than ready to go. The chestnut ball of energy would probably have galloped away there and then if he didn't have more in the way of manners. He didn't snatch at the rein and make his own way, but he was making it clear that he thought his handlers weren't moving quickly enough.
Slick had proven himself on the track once already, claiming victory in his debut and proving to Alexia something she had already known - he had the heart of a racer. But one win wasn't enough - it was just a scratch on the surface of his career. A strong start, one which could be built on and now he would be pushed to the next level with a major race. How he performed in the Unicorn Horn could well shape his juvenile career, as well as being a once in a lifetime opportunity to win one of the juvenile titles. It would be a challenge, but not one beyond what the little fireball had in him - at least not in the trainer's opinion.
Lucy was hyped about the colt too. It wasn't only the way he started to ignore everyone else when she was around but his energy and spirit. He loved to run, he loved to race, and he never stopped. Of all the horses at the stable he was the one who never seemed to stop. A few of them had energy, but not the constant buzz of activity that came with Slick and keeping him stimulated. She knew all too well that he was hard work for the other staff members, given that if you didn't keep his energy directed in a positive direction it would turn to negative behaviors but she found it endearing.
The jockey grinned as the colt arrived at the track, confirming a few things with the trainer before walking over and patting Slick's neck. The colt nuzzled at her neck and she ran a hand down his nose. "Let's show them." The plan was simple - gallop. One furlong under the colt's own steam, followed by two furlongs of him being driven. It would help to keep his energy down until race day and (hopefully) ensure he had the drive to run at his best come race day.
Pulling herself into the saddle as the colt fidgeted, Lucy found herself excited. Excited for the future, for the colt's potential... Excited that she had a chance to prove her own skills and those of the horse she rode. No one said it would be easy, but if everything was easy then life would be boring. A challenge gave you drive, focus, energy. If everything were easy, then the world would probably be full of boring, lazy people.
The handlers led them to the gate, the colt on his toes and his movements almost a prance. He was excited, he knew what was coming and he enjoyed the exercise. He was even eager when it came to loading, striding in confidently and barely even reacting as the shutters were closed behind him. Other than a little shifting, the colt was calm in the contraption - the movement was more being eager to get started than any form of nerves and when the gates opened he broke cleanly with short, quick strides. The pace didn't wane, either, the colt was in his element as he stretched out over the turf in a quick four-beat.
There was no denying the colt's energy - he moved enthusiastically, his ears forwards as he loped onwards. He was a horse ready to run, ready to prove himself. The first furlong closed quickly, Lucy starting to drive and the colt springing forwards with renewed determination. His strides lengthened, his gait powerful as they continued. Soon enough, the workout was over. Slick steamed past the post with the gusto he had shown throughout and Lucy was pulling him in. He didn't want to stop, but he grudgingly slowed until he came to a stop. The colt snorted, a light sweat apparent across his toned body.
"That's it, Slick. Hopefully it's enough."
