SOPHIE'S VOICE && JOHNNY GARNER
By the time Firestone had finished their workouts, the sun was setting and everything was cooling off. Carter was drained, but knowing the last workout was over in a few minutes gave him hope to go back to his house and sleep. The setting sun cast an eerie glow over the dirt track as the final two were led to the rail. Aquatic Addiction had some fire in his belly today as opposed to his usually calm demeanor. The five year old bay stallion pawed at the ground, anxious to get the work over with. Beside him, Sophie’s Voice was kicking up a fuss for her handler. She tossed her golden mane and threatened to bite Theo, who was making faces at the mare who matched his size. They looked like a match made in heaven, and it was definitely in Carter and Jenna’s plans to breed the two next season when they retired. That foal would be dynamite on the track and definitely one to watch out for.
“Four furlongs, no more, no less.” Carter informed them as Johnny and James mounted the two and set off for the dirt track. Pushing the horses into a trot, they made their way around the outside of the track and then into a smooth gallop. James patted the dark bay stallion beneath him. Theo was a seasoned grade one racehorse and both James and Carter were extremely thrilled that they had picked him up. Soph was throwing her head about, trying to get Johnny to loosen the hold on her reins. Johnny held tight to the reins. The mare was not getting her way, not yet.
When the time was right, Soph took off like a rocket. The chestnut mare sprung to the front, easily overtaking the stallion beside her. Soph may only be grade two, but she was one tough customer. Soph stretched her legs and reached her nose out and lengthened her stride. She loved to be in front and there was no way she was going to let Theo get his way. Theo gave the mare the side eye as she passed him and James just watched. Theo wasn’t upset that she had passed him, since he preferred to be in the back. He cruised along nicely; tail streaming out behind him as they passed the first three furlongs. The curve came up at a daunting speed, both horses bolting recklessly around. Soph kept the pace fast since she was in control as Theo started to inch up beside her. Once they hit the homestretch, James and Johnny let the horses have their head at last. Theo sprinted forwards, quickly accelerating to match Soph’s pace. The mare pinned her ears and Johnny tapped her with the whip. With a flick of her tail, she kept going, eyes wild, with bits of foam flying back from her mouth. Theo didn’t give up as he thundered forwards in a flash of brown.
Both horses were sweat soaked as they passed the marker for four furlongs. It was pretty much a dead heat between the two sprinters, and Carter wouldn’t have it any other way. They were his strongest sprinters as of now, along with Demi and Siren.
