The day had started out unexpectedly warm, warmer than it had been in the past four months. The horses were slightly sluggish coming out of the paddock and their jockeys looking just as tired as their mounts. It did not take long for the sweat marks to start showing around the eyes and girths of all the horses. The runners coming back from their exercise were frothy around the bit, eager to get a cool hose down before getting their afternoon grain. At least the dirt track would offer some relief once they were underway, with the wind whipping around them at high speeds.
Maverick led the mare onto the track and spotted his two other breezing partners already getting their warm ups done. The big boned grey stallion was hot footing it around in the dirt, ignoring the other horses who were reluctant to move at all in the heat. Glory Bell always had that kind of energy no matter what. The little train that could per say. Just ahead of the older boy was the dark bay three year old that had yet to show his true potential. Reliance had the biggest head of all in the barn, but still had not learned to put it to work in the racing circuit. It was hoped that with some work, the colt would settle down and really focus on his running and a little less on who was riding him.
After warming up Tiny Dance, a lithe bay mare with a big white blaze, he joined the other two horses next to the starting gates. In an effort to switch up their routines and keep them on their toes, they would not be using the metal gates. Instead, Felicity had instructed them to walk the horses up as if they were going to be loaded, but line up off to the side instead. Mav watched as Bella visibly relaxed aboard the grey. Leo occasionally had issues with the gates, so today gave them both a break from the exhausting fight that usually in-sued before a race.
They signaled to each other they were ready and a groom waved them on. In a flash, all the horses were galloping and headed into the inside by the rail. Even without a gate, each one started as soon as their jockey had urged them to. This was part of the reason they ran without the starter. The faster they were at responding, the better chance they had of getting a good spot in a race.
Without a front runner to run against, Glory Bell insisted on pushing Reliance to the front in order to take up his stalker position. The bay colt did not overall like the idea, but pulled on ahead anyway. Their pace was slower than usual, but by no means were the horses into their full stride yet. While the two boys were fighting for the second position, Dancer had settled into the rear in her own closer position. This was where she was happiest, with the other horses in sight. Maverick watched as they rounded the first turn. The three horses seemed to be running without a hitch. There was no bumping or even a misstep as they glided along the track.
Positions stayed the same until the rounded the last turn. Mav could tell Reliance was starting to get tired, and Glory Bell, like usual, was showing no sign of fatigue. He would be their biggest rival when it came time to move. He planned on holding the mare until the big grey would make his move, and then they would chase him down on the homestretch. It did not take long until Bella urged the stallion to pass the leader. Reliance and Clinton were not about to give up, so they held off the older horse for a while longer before finally dropping back, tired of running under the hot sun.
Dancer knew they had to move soon and started straining against the bit, willing her rider to let her go. Maverick agreed and let out a large amount of rein, giving her more room to run. She stretched out and was on Ry's flank in a matter of seconds. The bay colt was determined not to let the filly pass and put up another fight, this one going over much better than the first. Glory Bell was gaining distance on the younger two as the battled. The finish marker was looming in the distance, approaching faster with every stride.
Mav pushed the mare to run harder, hoping she had enough left to get her nose past the stablemate. Just as the line flew by, Dancer managed to stick her neck out and get ahead of Reliance by a thin margin. Leo was several lengths ahead, basking in his namesake. They pulled up the horses before commenting on their fantastic mounts. It took a minute for the horses to stop blowing, and cool down. All three were looking forward to the cool hose that was waiting for them back at the barn.
