APOLLO BEAR && ISABELLE NOTTINGHAM
BEYOND PERFECTION && CLINTON WARD
DISTANCE = 5 FURLONGS
ESTIMATED ORDER = APOLLO BEAR (Front Runner), BEYOND PERFECTION (Preceder)
It was early in the morning and Clinton could already tell it was going to be a hot and miserable day, souring his already bad mood. The day was going to be filled with workouts and as the day went on, they would only get harder and harder. He was rather grateful to see that the powerful bay stallion was the first on his list of breeze pairings. Beyond Perfection had proven to be a noteworthy distance runner known for his powerful kick at the end of a race. Having placed in all four of his races and won one, the team was hoping the five year old would pull out some more wins before a possible retirement at the end of the season.
Bear's opponent would be another powerful older stallion that was recently acquired by the barn. Apollo Bear was bigger and more experienced, only two wins away from becoming a G1 runner. Felicity was desperately hoping to get the black stallion to that title before his definite retirement this year. Bella appeared to be doing rather well with Olio, and quite possibly was sad to see his racing years slowly ending, but the girl was good at hiding her emotions, Clinton would give her that.
The two older stallions stepped out onto the dirt track which was still freshly drug from the night before. The moisture left in the ground was escaping and provided an eerie cover of fog that obscured their view of the opposite side of the track. As far as they knew they were the only two riders to have approached the track this morning. Which was appealing considering it could get almost crowded later on in the day.
Clinton and Bella warmed up their mounts separately before meeting at the mile marker, smack dab in the middle of the homestretch. Their breeze would last for 5 furlongs, just as they were to come onto the back stretch. Neither horse was a sprinter, but after several vigorous distance runs, they needed a break. Felicity was confident this would also teach the stallions to settle into their strides faster, something that could make-or-break their positions in a race.
Bella nodded and the two jockeys whooped and spurred their horses into a gallop. Bear almost immediately veered to the right, surprised by the sudden order. Clinton, already expecting the stallion to go off course, gently nudged him back into the rail by Olio. Soon they were neck and neck, pounding their way around the track. Their distance was already half gone and the stallions were still adjusting to their stride. Clinton knew he had the power underneath him to sweep the other pair off their feet, but decided to focus on getting his mount to run in a straight line and keep up with his partner.
Olio was cruising, already on autopilot with Bella on board. They ran with ease on the rail, Bear and Clinton just to the outside and keeping pace easily. The run was barely going to touch the horses' energy reserve, but it would definitely wake them up. They passed the marker, both horses willing to go much further. To their surprise, the jockeys pulled them up after the short distance. They tossed heads a little, frustrated that they had more track in front of them. Even then both where starting to show sweat from the humidity. The jockeys were satisfied with their run, they had settled faster than usual, proof that repeated breezing would perfect their running style for the rest of the season.
