The Best Is Yet To Come
Call Me Crooked and Alex Shade
My Kingdom Come and Hadely Grayson
And After all that we've been through
And after all we left in pieces
I still believe our lives have just begun
Cause now the past can be outrun
And I know you are the reason
I still believe the best is yet to come
- Red - The Best Is Yet To Come
White rimmed eyes, hind ends and excessive squealing was the beginning of the day for the majority of the staff at Grayson Meadows on this particular morning. The delinquent by the name of Crook had managed to break out of her stall around four times in the past week and eat a whole bag of horse treats along with leaving a lovely pile of horse crap in the tack room that left it reeking of horse poop for two days. It always seemed like Crook would do the worst imaginable thing and then figure out a way to magically top that the next week.
Ever since the bay daughter of Crooked Fire had become a three year old she'd became rather cocky, and even more of a ruffian as each day went on. She'd given the barn quite a few good laughs and a lot of head scratchers in her time at Grayson Meadows. As of now it was just expected to find Crook doing something she wasn't supposed to be, such as cribbing or pawing at her stall door for no other reason than she just was bored enough to paw her way through it.
However, the delinquent was a rather brilliant animal and she proved it time after time. The turf sprinting champion was well on her way to greatness and after nabbing the first leg of the Turf Triple Sprinter Crown she was back for round two. She may have lost the Breeders' Cup by a nose to Athena's Desires, but there was no doubting that the best from Crook was yet to come. If it was at all possible for the filly to improve more.
Bey on the other hoof hardly gave the barn a lick of a problem, other than being excessively grumpy when she didn't quite get her way and win a race. Which happened rather often. But the talented filly still managed to put in her best effort at the end of the day. There was little doubt that Bey would eventually make a name for herself by dropping a huge upset in a big race one of these days.
Crook danced around the turf like a ballerina, quite literally rearing to go. Alex had always admired Crook's willingness and need to run and how the filly hummed to life the moment they stepped on the track. Was Crook a hot horse? Certainly, but her boundless energy managed to get her win after win after win. For someone at the top of her game currently, it didn't seem like Crook could get any bigger. She was the sprinting queen of the turf currently, but as the old saying goes, the bigger they are the harder they fall. Something Alex knew all too well, but what impressed him the most about Crook's run in the Turquoise Sprint was that the filly had so much left in her as she drew away. The race was a payed workout. However, with the edition of Athena's Desires this wasn't going to be the same race with the exact same result. Now the competition stiffened, and everyone was out to get the horse on the top, it was Alex's job to make sure she stayed there.
Bey was facing a whole different field now. Her competition being Spitterfly. It wasn't a little known fact that the longer the sprints got the better Bey got at running them. Still she would enter as a long shot. Not that the shoe didn't fit. However, she did give Athena's Desires a run for her money and the grey roan filly was improving, despite her few starts.
Bey traveled willingly under Hadley, playing with her snaffle in her mouth and flicking her ears back and forth at a camera click here or a snort or whinny from another horse in the distance. Her rather attentive attitude was a very nice touch, one that served her well on the track.
Crook on the other hand arched her neck and ducked her chin into her chest, trotting as quickly as she possibly could without breaking into a canter. The act itself caused Alex to smile as they headed towards the pole that marked the beginning of their work. They had done some gate schooling with Crook earlier that week and decided to skip over the gating for the work today.
Once Bey was alongside Crook Alex nodded over to Hadely and kissed to Crook. Hadley followed suit with Bey, tapping her a few times on the shoulder to get up next to Crook who strode out effortlessly.
Crook flicked her ears around listening for Alex and listening for Bey's hoof-beats behind her. She strode out like the true champ she was, her main was a black fire blazing across the prairie. Her body an unstoppable machine, she'd never looked so good in her life. Long gone was her scrawny two year old gangly little body and now she looked like a lean swan, graceful but powerful. A force that was to be reckoned with.
With only two furlongs left to go Hadley sent Bey after Crook, hoping that the bay filly had exerted herself although it was highly unlikely. Her tiny gray-roanish body made and appearance next to Crook's shoulder and for a second, Hadley thought Crook may just have exerted herself. But when Bey got up to Crook's throat the filly took off, and not just a little, two strides and she was already a length a head, then three, five. Crook powered her way down the turf and Alex didn't even have to so much as touch her. He looked behind him to see Bey trying her hardest to cut into Crook's lead but she would never catch the super filly that he sat upon as they crossed the wire a solid six lengths ahead of a fast closing Bey.
Alex pulled up on his prized filly, certain that the best was yet to come from Crook. Hadley looked rather satisfied with their time as Aaron called out to her, even six lengths behind Crook Bey's time was still quick and she was bound to take on Spitterfly with everything she had.
