Workout for the Red Wine Sprint
To say the crew at Grayson Meadows was more than pleasantly surprised with Chatyoant would be an understatement. The colt baffled everyone as he charged down the stretch to overtake the mighty Silent Snap and won the first leg of the sprinter triple crown. Now that brought up the question, could Chatoyant win the Sprinter Triple Crown? Not likely, but no one could discount him for trying. His competition was stiffer with the entry of Witch Creek Stables Sun King, who had done nothing but dominate his foes all season while Chatyoant had been eating his and Silent Snap's dust all season with one bad finish after another, putting him in the Tick Tock Sprint had been a very bold move, but one that looked to have been the correct one.
The sprinting division was something like a game of chess, a game of thrones. Everyone would be going after whoever was on the top, all striving to get their spot upon that throne, to get the rights to rule their division. Due to Sun King not going to the Tick Tock Sprint, it looked as if Chatoyant was the horse on the top. However, he still would be a long shot. An even longer one than last time, but there was a very important part of this game of thrones that the horse racing world played, Chatoyant had beaten Sun King not once, but twice, the feat was a difficult one, but not a impossible one. Alongside of conquering perhaps one of the best sprinter-miler horses that the country had to offer, Chatoyant had also beat Silent Snap on numerous occasions. As a matter of fact, every horse in the field had beaten each other at least once. By winning the Tick Tock Sprint, it would appear that Chatoyant had already made his move, and that the other two were ready to call check mate on him. However, that would not happen if Andrew had anything to say about it.
Although Tayo had worked very well going into the Tick Tock Sprint, his win still shocked everyone, but their battle was not yet won. He was not over, he had a much larger wall to climb, and a much fiercer opponent to take on. He may have won the first leg, but that didn't mean that he was done, or that he was taking a break, because he most certainly was not.
He pranced out onto the track with a bit more fire in him than normal, giving a few tugs at the reins here and there but never having quite a meltdown. He was a good kind of prancy, nothing like Crook or Cobweb.
Sun King would have to cut back, six furlongs was much shorter than what he had been running, and it would be his biggest weakness in the Red Wine Sprint. A weakness that Andrew was more than willing to exploit. Plus the addition of Sun King helped Tayo more than the Witch Creek crew knew. He was a pace presser of sorts and he would be there to push Silent Snap to his limits while Tayo would bide his time at the back and make his charge in the final two furlongs.
Andrew cut his princly colt loose, allowing him to have some of his head as he flew down the track with nothing but the wind in their faces, the sound of Tayo's hooves and their joint breathing. They worked as one, rather than just rider and horse. They were a team, a rather lethal one at that too. Andrew pushed Tayo faster as each furlong ticked by and soon they were flying into the stretch. Andrew was marveled at the colt's sudden change in attitude and ability. He was hitting his stride again, and the sheer power the colt had after sprinting a full three furlongs was rather impressive.
Rounding the final turn and into the stretch, Tayo caught sight of Hadley upon Frost and tugged at the reins. Andrew held him steady until they hit the stretch and let him fly after Hadley on Frost.
The earth trembled in the mere presence of Tayo, and the drive down the stretch was a impressive one. He hit his passing gear and fired down the lane to catch Frost, which he did in just a matter of strides. The stallion was more than happy to leave the older quarter horse in the dust, which is exactly what he did. Tayo began to open up, two, four, five lengths on the wire and still gaining.
