Limited Edition was a calculated purchase by Valencia Andrews as a yearling. Something about the chestnut colt of as-then unproven bloodlines called out to the young apprentice jockey who only then was beginning to make her mark on the world. And boy was it a fantastic purchase. As a juvenile, Ed did everything right. He only placed out of the top two twice and by the end of the season had captured eight races including the jewels of the classic dirt juvenile calendar - the Wire Finish Cup Juvenile Dirt, Magic Millions Colts Dirt, Follow The Hoofprints Dirt, Just A Trot Futurity and the true test that made him an early Triple Crown favorite, victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile.

As a three year old, Limited Edition continued to be brilliant. He was pointed to the Triple Crown early on and never looked back, capturing two preps en route to the actual series. The colt placed third in the Kentucky Derby, but came back to win the remaining two legs in the Preakness and the Belmont, redeeming himself quite nicely. The colt raced through a quiet summer season before bursting back onto the scene in September, winning the Hollywood Gold Cup and then capturing another jewel of the classic dirt three year old calendar in the Climax Cup. He also managed to win the Invasor Stakes before finishing off the season with a brilliant third place finish against older horses in the Breeders Cup Marathon. The colt was every inch worthy of the Breeders Cup Classic but was steered well clear of fellow superstar stablemate Eternal Phantom who went on to capture the race before being inducted in the Hall of Fame herself.

Ed's final season was a testament to his lasting class. He raced solely in Horse of the Year company and put in classy performance after classy performance. He landed big wins in the Starry Night Stakes, These Old Bones Stakes and Babbling Brook Handicap and also won a leg of the senior dirt series in the Kiss Your Title Stakes. The chestnut stallion went on to finally run in the Breeders Cup Classic and ended up finishing second to yet another amazing mare in the form of Intrepid's Nightshade. Limited Edition more than redeemed himself though in the Dubai World Championship, winning the final race of his career and defeating Nightshade, achieving his retribution for a Breeders Cup Classic that he never won.

Limited Edition ran in a time of greats and was a great himself. He was consistently among the best season after season and left it all on the track in his final race with his final victory. Against stablemates and competition that shortly landed themselves in the Hall of Fame after retirement, Ed was strong. His great, consistent performance, numerous Horse of the Year victories each season and respect accorded merit nomination, at the least, for the Hall of Fame.

I voted no and my reasoning was this: Ed was a blossoming three year old who ran with consistency as an older horse, but I didn't think that those consistent runnings notches him as HOF horse within my mind. I think that he was one of the top dirt horses when he was running, but not near HOF level within my mind. A great horse with a try hard attitude is what he was, but as for being a horse to put on a pedestal to use as a model of all dirt horses? Not so much in my mind. Please don't take this personal lol You know I love Ed. <3

The main reasons why I wanted to nominate Ed are because fewer horses compete as consistently across their careers as he did. He was dominant throughout all of his years on the track. To cap off his career, he beat some excellent horses in the Dubai World Championship. He lost to future Hall of Famer Nightshade (as you know) in the Classic but got her in the Dubai World Championship, which cemented him in my mind as an HoF worthy pony.

Mainly, he won all of the key races he needed to and was tough every season, not just one. So that's why I nominated him XD
