FRESH START
With year seventeen beginning, it's time to recap last season and explore options for the upcoming one. All of our juveniles for this year have a beginning workout, so they will not be included here beyond their pedigree as an introduction. We are having a good time playing with our yearlings who will put in a showing in the prospect arena, and our brand new foals. We are also excited to announce a new breeding section at NDM, as our horses are getting booked in advanced, please be sure to check our stud book and broodmare books to check up if you have reserves with us to help plan your own rosters (some horses are booked five years straight for instance but have one or two openings soon). We have a few open horses, but most of our horses are closed for year seventeen.
OLDER HORSES
BARELY A SOUND: She spent most of last season at Nature Springs, and pulled in three wins. Back at NDM in December she snagged a HOTY and undercard win, putting her one away from grade one status. The last couple wins rounded out her season quite respectably. She has had three fairly even years of racing, and we expect to give her one full final year of racing. To start with we're going to give her two gentle introductory undercards, and then go aggressively into five solid HOTY races across all three tracks, and see if she settles at all into it.
FINAL CONQUEST: Conrad trucked along in his usual way, and edged into grade one at the end of the season. He hasn't yet won in that grade, but he will have a full five year old season with Ender. The only horse to be leased out, we hope he can break free of undercards and find some HOTY status, but if not, we feel he'll still land on his feet. Ender has plans to attack more aggressively into higher HOTY racing mostly at TW, we will see if he has some talent to take on more challenging competition! He seems to favor second place, having placed 26 times there so far, perhaps the more rigorous racing will spark his competitive drive.
IMPRESS THE MOONLIGHT: Having had a difficult season, Moonlight ended up in some undercards late in the year, with most of November and December off. We brought her back to participate in Breeder's, despite us not feeling comfortable entering her. She made a win in the Delator Stakes just a week before Breeders, which we hoped would help prime her for the toughest Breeder's she's ever faced. Placing third behind half-sister Pandora and Lissome, we have debated heavily on retiring her, but feel she isn't quite done yet. We have planned 16 HOTY races for her for Y17, if by midway she is not showing her three year old spark once more, we will let her go out early and not run her career down.
SIMBA: Our best older racer this year, Simba is primed and ready for a stronger five year old year. He made it to grade three, and we are excited to see how he does this coming season. We're hoping to put him more into HOTY company, and if he can hold his own he might be a great candidate for some tougher races and perhaps Breeder's next year. Such a wild card to come to NDM, it is very exciting to see how wonderfully he has been doing. His efforts have really helped keep our chins up when the tough times arrived.
CROOKED INTENTIONS: Being one of those oddball mixes, Tia hasn't quite found her niche yet. She pulled off a disappointing year, and just edged into grade three. Hopefully being four this year she can get a firmer hold and make some stronger strides for her career. We added an extension on to her last year, however she seems to be doing better at the shorter mile races. We have her in undercards only for the first few months of Y17, if she can find a good pacing in those we will go from there.
SUGAR DEMON: This strong willed lady has pulled in a large HOTY season with a mixture of results. She participated in the sprint triple tiara and placed third in two and fourth in one. She's been racing around some tough competition, and wasn't able to find wins until we dropped her down into some undercards. We tossed her into a breeders at the last minute, and found her placing fourth. Next season we are heading her into HOTY races only for the first few months, and we hope being a bit older and based on her company last season she can gain some ground, otherwise we will put her into undercards once again.
TIGER HEART: We feel in a way we have somewhat failed this boy, and are trying our hardest to rectify it. His two year old year showed great potential, but we did not give him the HOTY challenge that he should have had. Going into his three year old he was not able to outdo those his age who had a better background when we tried to bump him into higher classes. We gave him an extension and a surface supreme so he could compete in the CTC, but his nearly nonexistent HOTY background made him do poorly. He only won one race in the last six months of Y16, so we are going to try and give him a better, more thoughtful season in Y17. We are going to open him up with an undercard, and then bump him into HOTY racing, and give him a try at the spring dawn treader cup. Hopefully we can do him proper justice as a four year old.
THREE YEAR OLDS
DON'T COUNT ME OUT: Callie spent most of her year with NSA in the second place finishes, much like our older horse Conrad. She got a small smattering of HOTY experience, so we feel that with her three wins and the range of exposure she got she'll be a nice three year old for us. We aren't sure that she'll be able to compete in any of the triple crowns, but we sense from her that she will grow and expand and become a very respectable middling horse for us, one who can win the undercards and place decently in HOTY company. You never know though, we'll keep our eye on her, but she's definitely a little fighter, just like her sire The Underdog!
ETERNALLY SMOLDERING: Our best juvenile of Y16, Flame had fast success in HOTY company the first six months out on the tracks. He floundered a bit and began struggling, often placing last in autumn. We kept at his more rigorous schedule, hoping that he'd bounce back soon. He pulled off a great win December week three in the Louisiana Champion's Day Classic Stakes, just what we felt he needed, and popped him into a Breeder's race, which he won! Next season we are going to aggressively campaign him for the turf triple crown.
ITALIAN BEAUTY: Our little surprise princess, we snagged this girl from Snowflake mid-season when she took a break from the game. We are so surprised at this girl pulling off four wins with only half a season! We feel she has great promise, and is our first link into the Bank On Greatness bloodline. For Y17 we are planning on giving her an undercard and a HOTY each month for a few months, then see how she does into the more challenging HOTY classes. We aren't sure if she'd be ready enough for the triple tiara, but it's a possibility, if she does well early in the season in HOTY company.
JUSTA LITTLE CUTIE: We've tried very hard to figure this little girl out! We've been biting our nails at her results, but we believe now she does much better in grade specific classes, not open races. She seems to have moments when she does well, and ones where she sinks. We stuck an extension on her in hopes it would widen our abilities to scope out her range, and she seems to be able to function at all 5 furlongs she has now. She is going into Y17 with a smattering of undercards and HOTY races, and we hope she'll settle into a pacing that is more predictable.
LIBERATED TREASURE: A last minute arrival to NDM in Y16, she had four months on the track and we are very pleased with her performance! With nine races she pulled two wins, and as a new bump into sprinting tracks for us, we are very excited to see what she will be capable of. We gave her a surface supreme, and she has taken to both tracks equally well. For this coming season we plan on giving her some undercards to ease her in, and then gently add some higher class racing to see if she can hold a stronger hoof in tougher competition.
NUTCRACKER SUITE: We'd like to view her as a late bloomer. She could not get a win until late May, so half of her two year old season was in the maiden racing. Without harder competition she struggled in lots of out of the money placements for a majority of the year, her last win was in September. We gave her December off, and are hoping she can gather herself better to give a better showing in the grade five tracks. We are pleased she won twice at the 12 furlong distance, we will focus on undercarding her but giving her a surprise HOTY race, which will hopefully sharpen up her undercard racing.
PHOENIX INFERNO: Did not show much until very late in the year, he was stuck at one win for the majority of Y16. He snagged late wins in September and October, and when he won November week one we said that's it! So he has been on a break since then, we are crossing our fingers a two month break will give him some more time to mature. Upcoming for him are grade specific undercards, but we will give him a try in the Spring Cup at GHF and the stable face off, and if he shows some promise there we might try to give him some more general, lower HOTY races as they pass by. Unless he surprises us, but we are content with hoping a long break at the end of Y16 will help him as a three year old.
ROAD HOG: We purchased Road Hog in the fall of Y16, to help fill out our extremely lacking sprinting cards. He got a win with us, but has found himself up against a lot of competition that is HOTY but undercarding for some wins. He has shown a lot of promise, placing the majority of his races in second and third, so we know he has something in him, he's just bumping into horses that are often in the upper class. We are focusing on grade five races specifically for him, and are planning to try and get him to grade up soon if possible. As a three year old we hope he can grow out of grade five soon, but we'll take things as they come with this one.
STYLISHLY WILD: Reclaimed from Laceekay late in the season, we are proud to have this boy back with us, and are very happy to have started him out on his career. He only got seven starts for the year, but he did respectably in them, so we are promoting him for a large full season in Y17 to really see what he can do. So far just one win, but hopefully he will jump into new maturity as a three year old!
