Bona Fide + Leo.
Another exciting prospect had found it’s way to Highgrove in recent weeks, rather found her way. A daughter of True Enough. She had only been raced quite lightly through her juvenile year, and it meant the three year old was of entirely sound body and mind, and in prime condition to make her comeback. She was a lucky find, and one they were all very excited about. Leo was even more excited to welcome the sassy filly into their stables, and had been busted on several occasions swooning over her, even if he stubbornly denied it.
They made a good pair, though she had already proven difficult at times, Leo enjoyed the sparky ones. The pair were in unison as they jogged the outskirts of the dirt track, Connie watching on eagerly from the outside. She had yet to miss one of their workouts, keenly observing Bona Fide’s movements and how Leo reacted to them. She was complicated at times, seemingly unsure about what leg type she wanted to run, and Leo was still learning how to manage her on the track. Regardless, the little horse showed huge promise.
The pair picked up into a canter, accentuated by Bonnie’s overexcited pigroot and shuddering snort. Steadily Leo maintained her, to start with it was obvious they were having some small disagreements, but by the time they had worked around the track and passed Connie, things were starting to balance up. The filly began to rock, rather than pull, bringing her haunches in beneath her and driving forward with her rear, no longer fighting for her mouth. When it was clear she had become a bit more level at mind, Leo released her into a breeze.
The duo drummed onwards, appearing quite at ease with one another as they passed Connie once again; though she could only speculate. It became apparent that Bonnie was accelerating, the expansion of her lungs to be heard no matter where on the track she was. She continued to burn, her lower figure obscured by a writhing cloud cloud of dust as Leo hung over her neck and egged her to maintain it. Wow. Like father like daughter? Leo eased her up after a short time, and Connie walked down to the gate to open it and meet him there. “So?” she said, smiling, impressed. “I think I’m starting to figure her out. There’s still a way to go though.” Connie swung the gate closed as Leo walked the sweaty, bay filly through. “Well, it looked good!” she commented, encouraging. “That’s because she is good. She’s just not straightforward about it.”
