The Basics
Registered Name: Poisonous Pearl
Nickname: Pearl
Age: Three yr
Breed: TB
Colour & Markings: Dark dappled coat, two white socks
Height: 16.3 hh
Gender: mare
Personality: To truly understand Pearl and her unpredictable nature you need to know her upbringing; originally, she was bred to be a show jumper by an inexperienced riding school owner. Young and wild, Pearl simply couldn't figure out the bare basics of jumping. She would duck and buck and run till the cows came home. The rail terrified her, for some odd reason, and she wouldn't go into a stall unless another horse was there first. Her owners, not knowin better, isolated her. Soon, Pearl knew every trick in the book. She dropped her shoulder rounteinly, leaving her rider to plant face-first in the dirt, bucked in corners, and whenever she was forced to go in a straight line she would lean against the bit and gallop like she'd never run before. God have mercy if you tried to take her for a trek. Pretty soon, no-one would ride, even go near her. Finally, she was sold at rock-bottom price to Rory O'Connor. The jockey-turned-owner didn't see a jumper who wouldn't jump — he saw a thoroughbred who could run. It only took a few months for Mary-Ann Mulligan to turn the wobbly filly into a fine racer.
Despite finding her true calling, Pearl still hasn't settled yet. She's as wild and temperamental as ever, and showing no signs of slowing. She clings to other horses, and won't venture anywhere new unless she's on the track or with another horse. Eventually, her companions try chasing her away, but Pearl, who lacks a certain sophistication, never seems to learn when enough is enough. She is usually put out with a large group, so that she is never short of companionship. Around humans she is skittish and shy, but Pearl has developed close bonds with her handlers and riders. Surprisingly, she is eager to please, and her lack of intelligence is made up for in loyalty and bravery. Sometimes her truly sweet nature and spontaneous acts of kindness outway the fact she's convinced trailers have come from the darkest pits of hell.
On the track, Pearl likes to hang in the middle with the other horses for the majority of the race. Her passive nature can sometimes get the best of her, but mostly she is eager to please her rider and burst through to the front when the time comes. Pearl is living proof that book's cover can never really show what's inside.
