Sand Storm
Train Wreckcaught up in the storm
where life in uncertain and joys are a mystery.
The light chestnut's hooves dug into the sand with every step. The wind blew his newly cut mane in Kirsten's face. They were racing along side of the water in a blazing fashion. Sand Storm loved to run in the sand. Kirsten glanced over her shoulder to see her younger sister fighting with a dark bay filly in the distance. Kirsten continued to thread her hands along the chestnut's neck urging him to run even faster. She crouched low on the colt's neck to allow the wind to pass over them. She couldn't believe how fast they were moving she could do nothing but laugh.
Melanie flicked the reins of the two year old filly with annoyance. Her sister had insisted that Melanie take over the role of being Train Wreck's jockey. The stupid filly was just so stubborn! She was so hyper and had a small attention span. "C'mon you little devil LISTEN to me!" Melanie screamed with frustration. Rain flicked her ear for a second and then slowed her pace and started to zigzag along the shore line in and out of the water. "NO! We are supposed to go faster!" Melanie smacked Rain's rear as tears of frustration started to form in her eyes. They were supposed to be racing but instead they were playing a game of wits. Melanie literally hated the filly.
Kirsten tightened the reins as they approached the giant boulder they were racing towards and raised her hands in the air. They had won. She patted her Stormy between the ears and smiled as he closed his eyes in enjoyment. He was huffing from the run and had broken into a slight sweat. "We are going to have to do some trail work boy to get you in shape!" Kirsten laughed and looked in the direction of her sister.
Melanie had finally gotten Rain running in a straight line with a furlong to go. Kirsten had already reached the boulder and was basking in her glory. Rain took off in an eye popping speed towards the finish. She obviously had a good closing kick. The did the last furlong in 11 seconds, an amazing record for having to run in deep sand. As soon as the duo passed the boulder Melanie fought Rain for another furlong before turning back to Kirsten. She gave her older sister an evil stare. Kirsten knew that Rain was a handful. Now Melanie was stuck trying to control the little hyper brat.
